I’m going to ask you a few questions about the classes you want to teach, what you already know and where you are now. Then I’ll tell you what I’d concentrate on next if I were you.

No score. No “you’re not ready”. Just a sensible place to start.

First, why do you want to do this?

Before we get into venues, class plans, equipment and Instagram, I want you to think about why you want to start this business and what you want it to make possible for you.

There’s no right answer. It might be about money, family, flexibility, changing career, building something of your own, or something completely different.

How clear are you about the classes you want to start?

Very clear. I know the sort of classes I want to run and who they’re for. Fairly clear. I’ve got a good idea, but there are still things I need to work out. I’ve got lots of ideas, but I haven’t got any further than that yet. I’m not sure yet what I want my classes to look like.

Now, the business bit.

How far have you got with the numbers?

I’ve worked through what I could earn and what it would cost to run the business. I’ve done some rough figures. I’ve barely started. I haven’t looked at the numbers yet.

And how well do you know what’s already happening in your local baby class market?

I’ve looked into it: the classes running locally, where and when they run, the ages they’re for and what they charge. I’ve had a reasonable look. I know about a few local classes but haven’t looked into it in much detail. I haven’t really looked yet.

Let’s think about the babies themselves.

Imagine you’re planning an activity for babies aged around 2–4 months. Which of these is closest to how you’d approach it?

I’d start with what areas babies are typically developing at this age, for example cognitive development, then think about what activity could best support that development. Then I’d think about the role of the parent and how I could adapt it for individual babies as needed. I’d choose an activity I know babies enjoy, then think about how to make it appropriate for younger babies. I’ve got lots of ideas from classes I’ve been to with my baby and seen on social media. I have lots of ideas for lovely baby activities, but if I’m honest, I’m not completely sure what babies are typically developing at 2–4 months or how that should influence what I choose. I’m not sure yet how I’d approach planning an activity for babies this young.

Now, where have you got to with your name and social media?

Have you decided on a business name?

Yes, I’ve chosen it. I’ve got a shortlist. Not yet.

And what about social media?

I’ve started sharing what I’m doing and connecting with potential customers. I’ve set up my social media accounts but haven’t really started talking about the business yet. I haven’t started yet. I thought I’d wait until everything was ready. I haven’t started because I’m not really sure what I need to do.

I know what I need to do next and I’m getting on with it. I’ve got lots to do and I’m struggling to work out what comes first. I’m still researching because I’m not quite sure yet if this is for me. I keep finding more things I think I need to sort out before I can start. If I’m truthful, I think I’m waiting until I feel completely ready.
